I’ve spent the last year or so telling anyone who’d listen that Math Rock is the new Post Rock and, whilst the UK mostly failed at producing great Post Rock bands (yes, I know, except Mogwai and Yndi Halda), we’ve been churning out great Math Rock like there’s no tomorrow.
Instruments (Make Music)
Instruments (Make Music) have been around for a little while, with one sold out EP and a bunch of compilation appearances under their collectively London-based belt. Upbeat and poppy jangling guitars playing jerky rhythms and sparse vocals and keys make for a familiar sounding package, but something it’s hard to get tired of. And, whilst a bunch of the newly emerging ‘math’ bands lack the necessary technical chops to do the job properly, Instruments (Make Music) are definitely at the front of the pack.

They also destroy live, with a tight and energetic set that blew me away when I saw them last year. Though half of the fun could have been down to the show’s organiser being ridiculously drunk, and the whole show suffering from such large delays that they hit the stage at about two in the morning. But still. You should really head over to their MySpace to have a listen, or watch the video below.
