The retro-futuristic soul droid known as Janelle Monáe has become the latest in a long line of artists who've covered David Bowie's 'Heroes' (perhaps his most popular tune from his Berlin period). Monáe recorded the song as part of Pepsi's 2014 'Now Is What You Make It' ad campaign.

While The Wallflowers took a straightforward rock band approach to the song when they covered it back in 1998, and Peter Gabriel gave the track an airy, string-laden makeover on his 2010 covers album, Scratch My Back, Monáe opted for an upbeat, electronic take on that classic that is more akin to TV on the Radio's 2009 cover than Bowie's original.

Monáe's cut opens with a pumping drum machine loop and a wobbling synth bass. Atop the pulsing electro rhythms, Monae delivers Bowie's timeless lyrics with her signature soulfully smooth, confident vocals. Background vocals begin to creep into the mix, and the song culminates with in a swirl of R&B vocals and danceable beats. Check it out here.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Monáe was not shy about her admiration of Bowie, saying he is "part of my musical DNA," and siting 'Heroes' as one of her favourite Bowie songs. And Monáe has been on a covers streak lately, having also recorded a techno-funk version of Robert Palmer's 'Simply Irresistible' with Charlie XCX.
