January 22nd will from now on be commemorated in Austin, Texas as the Hi, How Are You? Day. Named after Daniel Johnston's album (and coinciding with his birthday), the new holiday will be used to raise awareness and support residents struggling with mental illness, a "reminder to reach out to our friends and neighbours to see if they’re OK," as Austin Mayor Steve Adler explains. "For those experiencing mental health issues it’s a reminder that you’ve got a whole community that can handle an honest answer because we want to help you get the help you need,” he adds.

Daniel Johnston was born in California but his work only gained visibility when he moved to Austin. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and although he toured fairly extensively in recent years, his final tour was concluded last November.
