Japan is known as having one of the heaviest tax rates in relation to internationally imported goods, and as of next year, music downloads will be included on the list.

Digital music, e-books, apps, and games downloaded from foreign servers will be taxed in a way similar to physical goods, reports Nikkei, while Asahi, one of the largest Japanese papers, explains that digital content bought from Amazon.com can get a discount, but downloads sold through domestic Japanese servers will be taxed.

Currently set at five percent, the tax percentage of physical goods should be increased to eight percent in April - eventually hitting ten when downloads become subject to taxation.
