Nakedness seems to be a theme within Jenny Hval's videos, whether literally as an expression of femininity and sexuality, or metaphorically in a more emotional sense.

Her latest video, directed by Marie Kristiansen, continues the motif of the naked female from her video for 'Conceptual Romance' (which you can see here), but this time grounds it in reality, rather than within the detached greenery we saw previously.

Where 'Conceptual Romance' commented on the daily acts of voyeurism that women experience, 'The Great Undressing' deals with blending in. Despite the woman's nakedness in a world of clothed people, no one notices her, suggesting the nudity may not be literal. So don't try doing the weekly shop in your birthday suit, I don't want you getting arrested.

Perhaps the nakedness symbolises freedom from conformity and capitalism - every other person in the video is dressed almost exactly like the others around them. The 'difference' of the protagonist is further shown when we discover that she is a caucasian woman in a black family. While her freedom does not isolate her on a superficial level, it becomes apparent that it hinders any emotional relationships with those around her. She has no friends at the gym, dances on her own, and is the only one who fails to pull on her night out. It seems that her metaphoric nakedness and disregard for conformity means she cannot relate to those around her.

Maybe Hval and Kristiansen are telling us all to get naked in an increasingly dystopian world which requires everyone to conform. You might not pull on a night out, but who wants to snog a clone anyway?

Also, definitely check out Blood Bitch, and if that tickles your fancy, Jenny Hval has announced tour dates for this year, so if you're around, go check her out.
