After performing alongside his former N' Sync bandmates at last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Timberlake stayed around town and made a very special appearance across the river at Hoboken's defunct club Maxwell's.

After announcing his appearance on Twitter, the first 150 fans who showed up to Maxwell's were treated to a free show – or a free song, if you will. The event was to perform 'Take Back The Night,' the single with the fairly NSFW video attached to it, for a new Target commercial. As expected, thousands reportedly showed up to the event.

Timberlake's sudden appearance was also notable because of Maxwell's former reputation – as one of the premiere indie rock venues of Northern New Jersey. It's where many of the states emerging bands, like Screaming Females and Real Estate first made a name for themselves, as well as the spot of the first live performance of indie veterans Yo La Tengo.

The band seemed a bit perplexed by Timberlake's Maxwell's appearance, which closed its doors July 31st. Here are a few from last night:
