After the quick-fire double of Singing Saw and City Music in 2016 and 2017 respectively, things had gone a little quiet in the Kevin Morby camp. But it turns out he has been working on his "most realized record yet,” which is called Oh My God and comes out on April 26th through Dead Oceans. Long time fans of Morby will know his penchant for religious imagery, and that is something he's pushed further on LP5, as he explains:

“Religion is around all of us... It’s a universal language and there is profound beauty in it. I’ve found it a useful tool within songwriting, as it’s something everyone can relate to on some level. There are religious themes or imagery in a lot of what I’ve done, so I wanted to get all of that out and speak only that language for a whole record. It’s not a born-again thing; it’s more that ‘oh my god’ is such a profound statement we all use multiple times a day and means so many different things. It’s not about an actual god but a perceived one, and it’s an outsider’s view of the human experience in terms of religion.”

First single 'No Halo' certainly has all of those ideas and desires wrapped up in it, and it comes out as one of the most immediately impressive Morby has released to date. Congregational handclaps underpin a rumbling and possessive verse, before the song ascends into its confessional chorus. In this vaulted area Morby is backed by delectable flute, saxophone and choral singers, who help to expound on the beauty and struggle of his situation. Check out 'No Halo' below.
