From the outset, with 2010’s Learning, it was clear that Mike Hadreas (under the moniker Perfume Genius) was a special talent both in his confessional lyricism and the creaky upright piano balladry he crafted on that debut album. With his just released sophomore album, Put Your Back N 2 It, that talent shines even brighter. Expanding both the lyrical content and the musical scope of the record, Hadreas crafted what is certainly one of our favorite albums of the year so far.

We sat down and talked to Hadreas a bit about the new record, how the title of the album came about, and Sinead O’Connor’s crack addiction. He also touches on his surprisingly controversial video for 'Hood', one of the advance singles from the album. Check out the interview, and certainly check out Put Your Back N 2 It, out on Turnstile Records today.
