Label Mates III kicked off at The Shacklewell Arms on March 6th, so we're getting to know the bands and labels involved. Next up, it's Liam May from Trashmouth Records.

The Rundown

Home to?
Fat White Family, Taman Shud, Meatraffle, Warmdüscher, Pit Ponies, Bat-Bike all have albums out or coming out, and we also have a bunch of tracks from David Cronenberg's Wife, No Cars, Lewis Idle and Helmholtz Resonators.

When did it start?
About three years ago I think!

What was your first release?
I think it was remixes of some Helmholtz Resonators songs. They got played on Radio 6 every day for about three weeks, so we thought it was worth doing.

How did it start?
Bands that we were rubbing shoulders with were asking us to produce records for them. Since no one has any money to pay us to do it, we thought if we started a label we could record them in our studio and then release the records and then kind of just see what happens.

The best thing about running a label?
The best thing about running this label is primarily making the music. If it weren't for that there's no way we'd ever be interested in running a record label. But equally there's also a real family/gang vibe and it's led everybody involved to having a lot of fun. It's hard to even just live in London right now, never mind finding a load of easy good times, so it feels good to be doing something that people can feel like they're a part of, you know?

What artists are you guys spinning the most at the moment?
I just bought Bobby Con's latest album, which is good. Apart from that, mainly old music. I kinda like old gospel at the moment and acid house.

What do you look for in a new artist?
I don't really know, but we know it when we get it. Trashmouth definitely isn't genre specific, but the bands always have a lot in common somehow. I guess they can't take themselves too seriously, have to be kinda outsiders somehow and have good tunes.

Stuff to keep an eye out for in 2015?
Taman Shud, Meatraffle, Warmdüscher, Pit Ponies, Bat-Bike and Madonnatron.
