Label: Bedroom Community Website: From: Iceland Founded: 2006 Founders: Valgeir Sigurðsson, Nico Muhly, Ben Frost Current artists: Valgeir Sigurðsson, Nico Muhly, Ben Frost, Sam Amidon A small and extremely collaborative label, Bedroom Community certainly lives up to the 'community' element of its name. Started by three unique artists from around the world, this group never ceases to produce breath taking music and it's because they are constantly joining in on each other's work. In an interview a couple of months ago with the 405, Nico Muhly explained: "The guiding light in it all is that the value of the work we all do is priceless in a sense, and that the only way to exchange is to barter... if Valgeir wants to work on something of mine, I'll work on something of his, and then Ben Frost will come in and do something on all of it... it feels like farm work in a sense, that everyone knows there's a certain amount of work that needs to be done, and you just have to go ahead and do it." If you haven't read or heard any of my praises of Nico Muhly before then I'll repeat myself: Juilliard School for composition graduate, mentee of Philip Glass, collaborator with many great artists and bands such as Björk, Grizzly Bear and Rufus Wainwright, and composer of scores for films such as The Reader, Muhly is the finest composer I have ever had the pleasure of talking to and seeing perform. His two albums, Speaks Volumes and Mothertongue display profound contemporary classical arrangements, along with his dark and humorous manipulation of many instruments. Nico Muhly - 'It Goes Without Saying' Valgeir Sigurðsson, Icelandic producer who stirs up most of Bedroom Community's creations in his Greenhouse Recording Studios. Any music that he's had a hand in making bears a strong presence; he achieves a bold experimental sound that compliments and even improves the talents of the musicians he works with. Valgeir Sigurðsson & Bonnie Prince Billie - 'Evolution Of Waters' Ben Frost, the most artistically experimental of the Bedroom Community, his music has intense influence on the nerves. His projects have included harsh blends of Classical Minimalism and Metal, which have a a distressing, unrelenting, ambiance to them. Ben Frost - 'Music For 6 Guitars' Sam Amidon, a spectacular revivalist of folk music, who's arrangements have a beautiful use of fiddle, banjo and guitar. These become unforgettable once his voice kicks in, which has a perfect balance between gruff and soft. Sam Amidon - 'Saro'
