Taking place in the beautiful Dutch city of Utrecht, Le Guess Who? is one of the year’s most eclectic and exciting music events. Styled as a “celebration of sound”, every year it draws crowds from around the world to witness some of music’s most innovative artists, representing the full spectrum of modern music. This celebration, and the unpredictability of the festival as a whole, is thanks to its focus on artist curated lineups, giving different voices each year the chance to share the artists and creatives that inspire them. In anticipation of this year’s festival Le Guess Who? has today announced the curators for 2019.

Norwegian artist Jenny Hval has always felt like the perfect fit for Le Guess Who? Her last performance at the festival connected internet culture to physical performance whilst questioning the demands of the music industry, capitalism and sex. We’re expecting a similar selection of thought-provoking and boundary pushing artists from her lineup this year.

Kevin Martin, aka The Bug, has appeared at Le Guess Who? in a number of guises over the years. Last year he collaborated with Miss Red for a set that amplified the bass of dancehall and dub to extreme levels, whilst 2017 saw him perform alongside Dylan Carlson of drone group Earth. This year we’re promised a lineup that will merge metal, noise, hip-hop and dancehall.

Patrick Higgins is a New York-based composer who uses music to explore social issues. A gifted guitarist, as well as a producer, we expect Higgins lineup picks to represent the best in contemporary composition and avant-garde music.

Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara has dedicated her career to addressing politics and women’s rights in her homeland, leading to her being heralded as a trailblazer for African music. Her program will reflect this with a focus on afrocubism (a blend of Malian and Cuban music) and afrofuturism.

Oregon-based Moon Duo craft hypnotic, motorik grooves that draw inspiration from krautrock and psychedelia. A consistently compelling live act, their lineup should be equally entrancing.

Finally, Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen and her partner, the sound artist Salvador Breed will also curate part of the lineup. We’re not sure what to expect from them, though van Herpen has previously designed for the likes of Björk, Solange Knowles, and Tilda Swinton, whilst Breed’s focus is on how ambience, acoustics and space work together to enrich our ways of experiencing environments.

Curated programs will be announced over the coming months. Tickets for Le Guess Who? 2019 are on sale now.
