The problem with iconic songs such as ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is that they’re more often than not covered badly (Miss Cyrus, we’re looking at you) and horrifically mangled, whilst the cover doesn’t offer us any new perspective on the original.

Fortunately, every so often a cover such as Heinali and Matt Finney’s take on the Nirvana classic breathes life into the old tunes, and gives us something new to enjoy. The twinkling notes of the famous tune introduce a somewhat different song to the one you know, or even the one you were expecting. A siren signals a change in style, as heavy, fuzzy guitars give us that famous intro.

Interestingly, Matt Finney’s signature spoken style is suited to the lyrics, and fits in well with the soundscape they’ve adapted to suit their own needs. It’s haunting and gripping, and not so unlike the original that you forget what it was all about in the first place.
