In the past, he has been Laura and the Tears and also Hey Laura. Now, she is just Laura Welsh. Since regrouping under her own name, the first fruits of her collaboration with Dev Hynes yielded the awesome single 'Unravel' earlier in the year.

Dev co-produced possibly the best pop song in recent memory with Sky Ferreira's 'Everything Is Embarrassing', and pairing up with Laura has seen them both up their respective games.

'Unravel' was good, but 'Cold Front' made me forget what I was doing. Yes, you could draw parallels with Jesse Ware, but this is more late night, more side street, more dangerous and less cocktail bar. Laura's expressive, husky voice weaves a deeply melodic pattern around slinky, sparse beats that echo off dark city buildings. The song creates its own space and then inhabits it.

The world is in desperate need of pop music this good. That is because we tend to forget pop music can have depth, and doesn't have to go out of its way to be a disposable, vacuous, auto-tuned nightmare. Press play. Then press play again.

'Cold Front' is out on July 15th.
