Back in February Lucy Dacus revealed plans for a year-long singles project, with new songs recorded and released in honour of notable days in the calendar. She started with a cover of 'La Vie En Rose' for Valentine's Day, and has today followed it up with a beautiful original called 'My Mother & I' in honour of Mother's Day, which is coming up on May 12th in the USA.

Far from a simple devotional, 'My Mother & I' is an honest song inspired by her thoughts about growing up adopted. Rather than focus solely on the facts, she uses the wistful, finger-picked number to extrapolate on thoughts about what she sees in herself from both of her mothers - delivered with her naturally graceful voice. She says:

“Being adopted has encouraged me to consider what mothers pass on through blood and body, and what they impart in the way of socialization and context. We -- daughters, and all children -- easily inherit the shame and fear of our mothers, but also the pride, self-assurance, and lessons of love. This song focuses on body image and the distinction between the body and the soul, which I can hardly claim to have clarity about to this day. I also reflect on traits my mother and I share as Taurean women- how we are steadfast but headstrong, empathetic but grounded, and dedicated to finding and giving reliable love and comfort.”

Dacus has revealed that the rest of her singles from the 2019 EP project will be related to to US Independence Day, Springsteen’s Birthday, Halloween, Christmas, and New Year’s - so look out for them around then.
