Virginia songwriter Lucy Dacus arrived on the scene in 2016 with her debut album No Burden, which pole-vaulted her onto the indie rock scene in a serious way. This caught the attention of Matador Records, who re-released the album, and are now her home for the foreseeable future. Today they have revealed that Dacus' sophomore album is called Historian and comes out on March 2nd.

Dacus came into the writing process with lofty ambitions, telling herself "The next record should be the thing that's most important to say." Of course, the last year has been tough worldwide, which Dacus has certainly channelled into Historian, along with reactions to personal tragedies such as losing her grandmother. She explores these topics throughout the album, which she says "starts out dark and ends hopeful, but it gets darker in between; it goes to the deepest, darkest, place and then breaks...What I'm trying to say throughout the album is that hope survives, even in the face of the worst stuff."

As a first taste of Historian she has released the 6-minute opening track 'Night Shift', apparently her first break-up song ever, but you wouldn't know that judging from the searing lyrics. She starts off with kissing someone else and realising she's not over her ex, then decrying the former lover by announcing “You’ve got a 9-5 so I’ll take the night shift/ And I’ll never see you again if I can help it.” There's plenty of violence and tumultuous feelings thrown out during 'Night Shift''s runtime, which clearly shows Dacus' development as a songwriter.
