Well, alright. In an interview she gave with NPR, M.I.A. discussed just why she gave the middle finger during her oh-so-controversial 2012 Super Bowl performance. For those that need a bit of catching up, the NFL is currently trying to find any possible reason why it was so harmful that she did that, so they can sue her for tons and tons of money. However, she's managed to come up with quite the reasoning as to why she did that: she was actually performing the Matangi mudra, which is a sacred gesture in her native Sri Lanka. Read her reasoning below:

“In America you have gang signs, and people throw up initials and stuff like that. Well, 5,000 years ago, there was thing called a mudra, which is your sitting position when you do yoga or you’re meditating or praying or whatever. And you have different ones based on what you’re meditating over. There’s not a lot of them that are named after gods and goddesses, but the middle finger is specifically named Matangi — the Matangi mudra.”

I'm not too positive that the NFL will particularly buy her reasoning, but it's worth a shot, isn't it?
