After drawing criticism for her Black Lives Matter comments, downplaying the severity of the movement, M.I.A was then announced as a headliner for London's first Afropunk Festival. Going from stating that "Is Beyoncé​ or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters? That's a more interesting question," to headlining an Afropunk festival was quite the leap for some festival fans, who were outraged, calling her statements anti-black.
