Macklemore has released an apology in response to the criticism surrounding his recent "fancy dress costume" fiasco.

The rapper made a surprise appearance at the EMP museum in Seattle wearing a prosthetic nose, a fake-beard and a black wig. He now claims his intention "was to dress up and surprise the people at the show with a random costume and nothing more" some, including actor Seth Rogen, interpreted the outfit as a Jewish caricature.

Following the incident, Macklemore tweeted "A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody," to which Seth Rogen responded "Really?? Because if I told someone to put together an anti-Semitic Jew costume, they'd have that exact shopping list."

In his statement, the rapper has attempted to clear up any confusion, explaining that the nose was from a witch"s costume, whilst the black beard was simply "the furthest color from my natural hair... I personally thought I looked very ambiguous in terms of any 'type' of person.”

"I truly apologize to anybody that I may have offended. I hope this better explains the situation and my point of view," he added.

During the surprise performance, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis played two songs including the second highest-selling single of 2013, 'Thrift Shop'.
