It's pretty cliché to call a young, rising singer a "little lady with a big voice" but that's exactly what Leicester-born, London-based Mahalia is. After impressing music critics and tastemakers from the tender age of 14, it's quite scary to think that she's still only 17 and has already worked with the likes of Rudimental and toured with Lianne La Havas and Ibeyi, to name but a few.

Her new single 'Back Up Plan' follows her Never Change EP from December and tells a semi-autobiographical story of someone outside of the world of fame, looking in. It's part spoken word, part sung and brings a truly refreshing sound to an otherwise crowded market. "It's one of the first songs I wrote when I was really young and it came out of watching reality programmes on telly and really sensing that just 'wanting to be famous' was never going to be enough," she explained to Clash. "I guess I'm also saying that as much as you need to follow your dream, there's always a price to pay."

'Back Up Plan' is available now on iTunes and all digital platforms via Atlantic Records.
