Matthew Dear has returned with material under his own name for the first time since 2012. 'Modafinil Blues' is steeped in customary textures for the producer, his plaintive baritone pontificating on cerebral problems such as the disconnect between free thought and institutionalised, unconscious biases. More importantly, it's groovy as hell, in part thanks to collaborating with Troy Noka, who's worked most prominently with Frank Ocean. The trundling bassline and ethereal backing vocal flutters submit halfway through to a more traditionally danceable descant, and it's all the better for it.

Dear plays London's Moth Club October 21st, his first live show in the UK since 2013.
