Label: Bella Union Release date: 18/05/09 Website: Buy: Amazon Scottish five-piece 'My Latest Novel' had a big ask to follow up their 2006 debut Wolves;' their thick and complex sound was utterly beautiful. Deaths and Entrances more than matches it's predecessor, it's darker and even deeper. Straight from the off 'DaE' is one of those albums that will capture you and knock you off your feet. The thick multiple layered vocals on opener 'All In All In All Is All' sound nothing short of brilliant. There is a touch of 'Idlewild' when they were at their very, very best, only infinitely more interesting and captivating. There's so much going on on Deaths and Entrances that it's hard to know where to listen which makes the album even better by every listen. Each song becomes more and more majestic each time. 'The National' have had it all to their own for all to long now, 'My Latest Novel' are more than capable to be up there alongside them. They've toured with the likes of 'British Sea Power' and 'Low,' they've even opened for 'The Pixies.' Of all the glowing references you can get, that has to be the most glowing. 'I Declare a Ceasefire' is as emphatic as it is melancholic with a chorus line that makes you hang on every word. It's rolling and rumbling fist-in-the-air sound makes you never want the song to end, or the album for that matter. 'If The Accident Will' grips you and will keep you hooked on it's ever changing themes, you have to make time for 'DaE' as once you've pressed play you won't be able to tear yourself away. The whole album is spine-tingling, the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention throughout. Deaths and Entrances is a complete epic, an epic nobody should be without.
