The fact that you haven’t heard Neneh Cherry for a long time isn’t that surprising: the Swedish pop star caught a hit in the 1980s with 'Buffalo Stance.' She hasn’t released any official solo work since the mid-90s, but has been spotted on several collaborations, including with Gorillaz on the 2006 track 'Kids With Guns.' So when new broke that Cherry would be working with jazz trio The Thing for a collection of cover songs, it was a bit surprising.

The Thing actually nabbed their band name after a piece from jazz great Don Cherry, who, yes, is Neneh’s father. The group is also pretty familiar with other artists, covering songs from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes, and others. The two sides decided on the collaborative effort after a performance together a few weeks back, and The Cherry Thing, which is scheduled for release 19 June, grew out of it.
