If you haven't been keeping up with the Boards of Canada mystery saga, here's the rundown:

  • 1. They released a bunch of surprise Record Store Day singles. The first one turned up in New York.
  • 2. A second single turned up at Rough Trade East in London.
  • 3. NPR and Radio 1 posted snippets of two new tracks.
  • 4. The singles found in the record stores had the following pattern on the front: '------ / ------ / ------ / XXXXXX / ------ / ------'. Then one by one, each mysterious clip has left us with the following code: —— / —— / 717228 / 936557 / —— /.

Right, so you're caught up.

Today we delve a bit deeper into the rabbit hole courtesy of FACT.

A hidden message has now been found in a banner on the Boards Of Canada messageboards. One of the users opened the .gif in Notepad, which revealed this:

The soundcloud links were then passed into a text editor to reveal a Mac course folder:

This links to two new tracks (here and here) and the number '628315', leaving us with —— / 628315 / 717228 / 936557 / —— / 519225.

This is either the greatest mystery release of all time, or fans getting ahead of themselves. More when we have it.
