What's been a major surprise about travelling the states for you?

We had both previously visited the US before Oh Wonder, but one thing we had never experienced was the major contrasts between each state. America has so much to offer, and it really blows us away how you can travel from the snow-capped mountains of Washington state to the blue skied beaches of LA in one long trip. There are such differences in the people too, and it's incredible that we've had a chance to see a lot of the corners of this wonderful country and its inhabitants.

The whole year has been touring for Oh Wonder, and what's incredible is how direct you two are about how much of yourselves you put into the project. What has touring for Oh Wonder taught you about yourself? What's something you didn't know prior to touring, that you now know?

Touring is definitely a quick route to finding out more about yourself, and being on the road for 14 months has facilitated both amazing and tough moments. Patience is something that we have both learnt on the road. There is so much waiting around! In fact, 23 hours of the day is preparation for the one hour that we have on stage every night. Hundreds of hours in a bus, 60+ airplane rides, and too many 4am hotel lobby calls to count. It's the dream of course, but it's also balanced out with the heavy touring reality of not much sleep, coupled with the need to constantly give it your all. You can't really have an off day.

Touring has taught us that the world really is smaller than we had previously thought. Looking out on a crowd in the USA or Germany isn't that different to looking out on a crowd in Brazil or the Philippines. The amazing thing about live music is that it's an opportunity to build a community for one night, where everyone has one thing in common - our band. It's the same all around the world, and wherever you are, it forces you to realise that we are just humans, all getting on with life.

What's been the most memorable place you've been to while travelling the states so far?

We've been lucky enough to visit some amazing places around the US, and by the end of this tour we'll have visited 31 states this year which is crazy. New York has always been a place that magnetises us, and the more we visit, the more we crave to live there. We had a month off in our touring schedule and took the opportunity to live in Brooklyn for the whole four weeks. We wrote most of our new album in an apartment in Williamsburg and the city energised us the whole time we were there. It's so full of life, and we tried to capture the vitality of the city in our new songs.
