After relocating to Europe six years ago, Berlin-based, New Zealand-born House and Techno DJ Philippa turned her focus towards production, in the process consolidating two decades of experience playing to dancefloors and a growing interest in studio work into a defined set of musical ideas. The fruits of her labours are on display here across her debut EP, Pronoia. A conceptual investigation of the notion that the world around us might conspire to do us good, and a deft intermingling of jazz and disco-funk motifs with the four-to-the-floor drum machine grooves and bubbly synths Philippa learned her DJ trade on, it’s a robust four-track offering.

While spacey club number ‘Let Me Know’ is obviously a focus (as implied by the presence of a radio edit on the EP), stylistically porous disco-rave cut ‘I Deserve A Break Today’ practically jumps out of the speakers by virtue of an undeniable groove accented by hip-hugging percussion and ascendent synths. After the high of ‘I Deserve A Break Today’, Philippa winds things down with the lush, syncopated jazz house shuffle and melodic optimism of the EP’s titular track, giving us several different reasons to pay close attention to whatever she follows Pronoia up with.

Pronoia is out now through At Peace (buy here).
