Not many venues get to be one thing by day and moonlight as something entirely different at night; at best it's a bar by day that becomes a louder bar at night, or a café that becomes a bar, or some other such combination. St John at Hackney Church is different: by day it's a church, an actual church, and come the evening, it transforms into a venue for live music.

There are strange parallels between the concept of the church - with this particular one built in 1792 in what was then an open field - and that of a live performance by a band or artist you admire. St John at Hackney's tagline is "Sharing, Loving and Serving in God's Sanctuary in the heart of Hackney," and this Christian message is one that sits very neatly beside its nocturnal hostings, instead with music at the helm: everybody at a gig also shares, loves and serves, in varying capacities, a little more hedonistic than real church, but still - the connection is there.

Over the course of two weeks we explored this dichotomy through one of our favourite mediums: the humble photo.
