According to an attorney close to the investigation, Prince passed away one day before has scheduled to receive treatment for an addiction to painkillers. Opioid addiction specialist, Dr. Howard Kornfeld was called by Prince reps on April 20 because Prince was having a "grave medical emergency." Howard Kornfeld reportedly planned to join them the next day. "The plan was to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan," Minneapolis attorney William Mauzy said on behalf of the Kornfelds. He added, "The doctor was planning on a lifesaving mission."

Toxicology tests have not yet determined whether painkillers were present in Prince's body, or if they had anything to do with his death.
