After joining Kendrick Lamar in the studio during his To Pimp a Butterfly sessions, Prince was initially supposed to appear on the album's Rapsody-featured track 'Complexion (A Zulu Love.)' The purple one was originally going to sing the album-track's hook, which was first revealed by Rapsody and later confirmed by Kendrick himself.

"That's true. Prince heard the record, loved the record and the concept of the record got us to talking. We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren't recording anything. We just ran out of time, it's as simple as that," Kendrick stated.
