PUP, the punk rock band from Toronto that you know and love, has just released ‘Free at Last’, a single and video from their upcoming album Morbid Stuff. This video is unlike any other I’ve seen in the best way possible. Stefan Babcock of PUP said, “The video for ‘Free at Last’ started off as a very, very stupid idea,” and from the beginning of the video I can see why he might say that.

A month or so ago, PUP posted the lyrics and chords from an upcoming track. The goal was to have fans record their interpretations without having any idea of how the song sounds. Boy, did they reach their goal. Babcock revealed, “We expected to receive 15 or 20 covers. We received 253. We listened to every single one front to back (13 hours and 34 minutes), and by the end, our brains were puddles of sludge and we couldn’t remember how our own version sounded.”

The beginning of their video shows some of these submissions, and my god, after almost 14 hours they would have to lock me away for the rest of my natural days while I muttered the chorus:

“Just cause you’re sad again
It doesn’t make you special at all
Just cause you’re sad again
It doesn’t make you special”

The project surprisingly turned out to produce an absolute smash of a video. They even received a submission from Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard’s band Calpurnia. The video features A TON of the submissions in the form of an instructional video, with ‘Free at Last’ played over it correctly. The video is insanely amusing and interesting to watch, as you can factually look inside a type of social experiment. Making people from all over try to cover a song they’ve never heard is a stupid idea, I agree Stefan, but turning their submissions into a music video is a genius one. Be sure to experience this video for yourself below.
