Musician Matt Mondanile, formerly of Real Estate and currently of Ducktails, has been accused of "mistreating women" by his former bandmates, reports Pitchfork.

In May 2016, Mondanile abruptly left Real Estate, the acclaimed New Jersey band which he had helped co-found. At the time, the statement from the band said that Mondanile was leaving to focus "on his own Ducktails project."

In a statement provided to Pitchfork, Real Estate now says that Mondanile was fired "when allegations of unacceptable treatment of women were brought to our attention." Pitchfork added that Mondanile has denied the allegations.

Here is Real Estate's full statement:

Matt Mondanile was fired in February 2016 when allegations of unacceptable treatment of women were brought to our attention. While we urged him to seek counseling at the time of termination, we are no longer in contact. We feel that any abuse of one’s power or status to victimize another is completely unacceptable. We applaud the courage of the women who came forward to make us aware so that we could address the issue head on.

UPDATE:

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast has tweeted her support of Real Estate's decision to come forward with the details of Mondanile's exit from the group, writing that Mondanile "was an absolute creep."
