Maxwell - Black Summer Night

Record Shopping with Betty WhoThis album is the soundtrack to my freshman year in college. The memories I have associated with this record are so tactile. Sitting on my best friend Peter stoop in Boston, or walking to class during my summer semesters sweatier than I'd ever been in my life. It's so sexy and mature and I felt like I was coming into my own musical taste when I found this record.

Elliot Smith - New Moon

Record Shopping with Betty WhoThis has a whole other set of memories associated to it. A friend of mine at summer camp made me an Elliot Smith mixtape (yes, wild I know, before there were playlists there were actual physical mixtapes) that started with 'Say Yes'. I went home and bought New Moon and listened and loved and lived in a state of emotional turmoil all through my angsty teenage years.

Nat King Cole - Unforgettable

Record Shopping with Betty Who'Unforgettable', the title track, is one of my favourite songs of all time. I wish I could time travel to a smoky bar and slow dance to this song with Nat crooning it effortlessly in the corner. When I'm home, my fianceé and roommate and I almost exclusively listen to Nat and Chet Baker and Edith Piaf and Ella.

Lorde - Melodrama

Record Shopping with Betty WhoIt's so refreshing to hear a record made by a full-fledged pop star that is so honest and authentic and true to her story. There's nobody doing what Lorde is doing right now. This album was a masterpiece and Jack Antonoff is a genius. I want to drive around the suburban New Jersey streets and blast 'Green Light' as loud as it goes and scream like I"m in Garden State.

Black Panther O.S.T.

Record Shopping with Betty WhoI listened to nothing but this soundtrack for about two months after it came out. It was our unofficial soundtrack of this last tour. We listened to it to warm up for shows, we listened to it on long travel days, we put it on the pre-show playlist. If I owned a physical copy we would have run it ragged.

Some Like It Hot O.S.T.

Record Shopping with Betty WhoIf I could ever in my life be as sultry and effortlessly sexy as Marilyn Monroe is in this movie and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I could die happy. There's something about her voice that was so untrained and accidentally perfect. 'I'm Through With Love' is my favourite song to sing in my robe in my bedroom and pretend I'm as chic as she is.
