Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

Record Shopping with FaraoMy co-producer Ådne Meisfjord showed me this album some years ago and I fell in love with Alice Coltrane’s harp playing immediately. This album opened up a whole new world for me within spiritual jazz, introducing me to Pharoah Sanders and also leading me to discover Dorothy Ashby. The recent compilation The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda was also a big one for me – chanting from Alice’s ashram combined with her playing the OB-8 synthesizer.

William Onyeabor - Who is William Onyeabor?

Record Shopping with FaraoI love William Onyeabor. I actually made a synth altar in his honour and put it on the back of my album cover, inspired by the synth altar he himself made at the end of the Noisey documentary about him! If you haven’t seen it’s a good documentary, and important to understanding the genius of William.

Nicolette Larson - 'Lotta Love' (Jim Burgess Remix)

Record Shopping with FaraoThis is another track my co-producer Ådne showed me, originally written by Neil Young (his version is good too). Nicolette Larson’s disco version though is really something though. Beautiful lyrics!

Laraaji - Celestial Vibration

Record Shopping with FaraoLaraaji showed me the beauty of the zither and his music brings me peace and tranquility. Celestial Vibration is a great album, maybe my favourite Laraaji release along with Unicorns in Paradise. I discovered him on this compilation called I Am The Center a few years ago and have been listening to him every since.

Arthur Russell - Calling out of Context

Record Shopping with FaraoAn amazing collection of songs by a forward thinking and innovative artist. For anyone who haven’t seen it I highly recommend the documentary about him called Wild Combination. I love his take on disco, it’s original and personal. I also like how he changed his style so much between each release, inspiring me to let go of old habits in my own music.

Aby Ngana Diop - Liital

Record Shopping with FaraoI’m not super familiar with this album, but listened to it a few times and like it a lot. Released by Awesome Tapes from Africa – an interesting label. She’s a singer from Senegal with good energy for dancing!

Farao's new album, Pure-O, is out now via Western Vinyl. Listen to 'Truthsayer' below. A massive shoutout to Rough Trade East for their generous hospitality.
