Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins

Record Shopping with ISLAND Toby: We’ve all been huge Grizzly Bear fans for a long time and they’re definitely one of our biggest mutual influences. Painted Ruins came out last summer, and as with all their records I didn’t fully get it on first listen - but I knew it would be a grower. It finally clicked when we saw them at Brixton in October, with all the new tracks coming to life and sitting really comfortably amongst that magical vibe they create on stage. The record is also heavily driven by Chris Bear’s quirky beats, who has continually been a big inspiration to me as a drummer - and he’s an absolute pleasure to watch live.

Beach House - Teen Dream

Record Shopping with ISLAND Rollo: I'd been obsessed with Beach House throughout my time at school, their self-titled debut album and second album Devotion being two of the best albums I'd heard. The sound was very in line with what I was listening to at the time, with Victoria Legrand even collaborating with Grizzly Bear on ‘Slow Life’ - everything seemed to fit together so by the time it came to their third album my love affair with the band was a serious one. Beach House shrugged off the impossible to ignore pressure of the notorious third album syndrome and produced another slice of perfection.

GoGo Penguin - A Humdrum Star

Record Shopping with ISLAND Wolfe: GoGo Penguin somehow manage to effortlessly stay afloat in today’s musical landscape (which is so reliant on hooks and vocal melodies) with just drums, a double bass and a piano. They instantly stood out to me when I first heard their debut album Man Made Object, so naturally, I had to pick out their follow up once we got into Rough Trade.

It was release day and I had just been to their Roundhouse show the night before so I was super hyped about their sophomore album - A Humdrum Star. It hasn’t been out for long so I’ll say my early favourites so far are ‘Raven’ and ‘Transient State’ but I’m really loving the whole album. If the last one’s anything to go by, I’m sure I’ll be listening for many more months to come.

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Record Shopping with ISLAND Jack: In Rainbows for me is Radiohead at their best, bringing together so many of the best elements of guitar music with subtle electronic, jazz and ambient influences. It’s a gorgeous record and manages to be clever without being overcomplicated. Though I love the album, I think it’s actually best understood by watching the From The Basement session.
