Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacThis record for me is an anthem! Whats going on as a title track is certainly timeless, but also what I love about the whole record is that it is time-FULL. It's the kind of record that no matter if you were born in 1971 or not, you still feel like you have an affiliation with that time. Records which can make you feel that way and even make you dance that way are the types of records that really inspire me to try and listen out and even try and find or create more unique characteristics in music.

Nina Simone - The Complete Bethlehem Series

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacThe Complete Bethlehem Series as a whole record for me is a social and cultural statement from a black American woman. Nina Simone was always typically known for her willingness to be marginalised in order to stand up for various rights as a black person as well as a woman. The standout song on this whole record for me has to be her version of 'I love you Porgy'. I kinda feel like this track, in particular, has been so underrated as a love song in recent years. For me, this song models personal and direct message of love.

James Brown - Sings out of Sight

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacJames Brown as an artist and performer is enough for any record to scream excellence! But this record, in particular, does it big for me, especially because of his version of 'I Loves You Porgy'. Mr Brown has the ability to make any lyric feel like he wrote it himself, even though that son, in particular, wasn’t written by him and a lot of his big songs on this record were written by others such as Ted Wright. That being said, I think this record completely encapsulates the saying “it's not just what you say, its how you say it”. I think there's so much to learn about performance from this record and Mr Brown's delivery.

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacBesides the fact that this record is by the absolute legend that is Jimi Hendrix… Three facts that absolutely spin my world on this record are. 1. Jimi Plays bass on this record! Any artist that is willing to take a risk and go beyond their comfort zone musically, I totally respect. Secondly, Mitch Mitchell played the drums. Having used to be a drummer, Mitch's feel and energy on this record is trendsetting quality! Finally 'Voodoo Chile', has to be one of my favourite Hendrix records of all time!

Bob Marley and The Wailers - Live

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacI grew up on this music! Often my old man would come home late from work by the time my sister, mum and I had finished eating dinner, and he’d move his tape player to the middle of the hallway and to my mum's irritation, blast out tunes like 'Lively up yourself' and 'Get up Stand up'. Literally, me and my little sister would do our bedtime routines as children to a soundtrack of big bass line reggae. We loved it! It actually shaped how I listen to music and embrace reggae as a young boy of West Indian heritage growing up in South London!

Michael Jackson - Scream

Record Shopping with Jake IsaacThis record is a bit of a curveball compared to the other records chosen. It's by a classic timeless performer known as the king of pop music, but it was a really recent release put out 8 years after his passing. It was supposed to have been a Halloween release, hence the title of the record, but for me, this isn’t the big thing about this record. It's the songs! 'Thriller'! 'Blood on the dance floor', 'Dirty Diana'! 'Leave me alone'! ARGH! These choons definitely make me feel like an 8-year-old watching the videos on MTV for the first time and trying to learn the dance routines!
