Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeyI remember the first time I found that because I found it in the sales department because I was a little bit too young I think when it came out. I had to go home and beg my mum to get money and I bought and listened to it in my little bed. It just changed my life, it really did. I don’t know who I’d be without Lauryn Hill and I definitely wouldn’t be writing my own songs, because that gave me like a clear concept of what I wanted my songs to be about and I’ve really tried to find that balance in my lyrics ever since I heard that record. It’s just remarkable that she made that album when she was 23 years old, she was super young and I just love her forever you know.

Alicia Keys - Songs in A Minor

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeyIt was also one of the first records that I bought. I had this deal with my uncle where I would do the dishes and I think I got like 10kr (£1) for each dish or something, so I did that for a week and then I could buy Alicia Keys Songs in A Minor and Ashantes first record. I remember very clearly the first time I saw that 'Fallin'' music video cos I’d just never seen anything like it, and that little run I tried to mimic, like the first one, and I never got it. I feel like no one ever gets it and I just adore her.

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two (Return of Ankh)

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeyI remember hearing 'Window Seat', the video where she’s walking and she takes off her coat. She did a lot of interviews about Groupthink at that point, talking about society and how like we all think the same and I remember that awakening something in my mind. I think she’s so brave and she doesn’t really get credit for that, like how original she really is, which is common for female musicians I must say. Also the first track on it I think the lyrics are, "If I get off my knees I might recall I am 20 feet tall" which is so beautiful and I’ve just carried that with me. That's why I love that record.

Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeySo the Young Fathers record I’ve listened to a couple of times and I just appreciate how experimental it is. I would really like to catch a live show of theirs because I’ve heard that they are really amazing. Also I love the artwork, the cover is beautiful. I found it in the hip-hop section which is always unfair because I feel like as long as there’s a black person involved they put it in the hip-hop section. I’m just super excited to see whats gonna happen with their music because I feel like they’re going to totally blow up and they’re really great.

SZA - Ctrl

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeyThe first time I saw her I was just blown away with how stunning she is but also her energy is so calm, I just really like that. She’s super cool because I remember she used to sing in falsetto before, she had a different tone of voice, and she just changed her sound up and just made it so much more original. I also think she’s an amazing lyricist because the angles she has on topics that we’ve like heard a million times were just amazingly well written. A friend of mine said something the other day that there's only space for one weird black girl at a time in mainstream American music and I feel that SZA and Solange kind of living at the same time kind of makes it feel like its opened it up a little bit, because everything is too slow always.

Leon Bridges - Good Thing

Record Shopping with Seinabo SeyLeon Bridges record I chose basically because I’ve been listening to the first track, I think it’s called 'Bet Ain’t Worth The Hand' for three days straight and I’m travelling with my cousin and she's singing the song and is like I haven’t heard this song but your singing it all the time and I didn’t notice that and I really like songs that kind of creep into my subconscious and I always hum. I feel like his first record might have been more organic in a way, like I can definitely like hear him trying to polish it up a little bit but without losing too much of what I really loved from the beginning with him.
