It is completely undeniable that Sampha had one of the most astounding albums of the year with his debut album Purpose. But the UK singer-songwriter was up against stiff competition when he was nominated for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize alongside the likes of Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, The xx, J Hus, Alt-J and more.

But after an award-ceremony packed with incredible performances, Sampha was crowned the winner of this year's prestigious award. "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents," Sampha said during the acceptance speech. "They came all the way from Sierra Leone and just wanted to give us the best upbringing possible. I'd like to thank all my brothers: Ernest, Sonny, John, and Junior for always giving me encouragement and making me believe in myself. I want to thank Jojo for putting up with all my chatter about synths and kick drums or whatever and for all the love you've shown me. I want to thank everyone at Young Turks and everyone at XL."
