Fun fact: I used to be a pretty huge anime nerd. I was up until the wee hours of the morning watching Adult Swim as their programming transitioned from Family Guy to shows like Full Metal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell, the latter of which may be finally getting a new live action movie made!

Some super exciting light has been shed on that film, namely that the star of last year's Lucy and Under the Skin, Scarlett Johansson, has signed up for the film's lead role. It'll be directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Bill Wheeler and released through DreamWorks.

For those not familiar with the series, it was an animated film that came out back in 1995 based on the manga of the same title. The movie, which was directed by Mamoru Oshii, places an interesting look at technology and the paranoia that ensues by following the adventures of Motoko Kusanaigi and her security agency squad members as they try and take down a hacker that goes by the name Guardians of Peace - just kidding, he goes by Puppet Master, but c'mon - someone had to make the joke.

According to Variety, "DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg is a huge fan of the original, and has long wanted to get this film off the ground." From her movies earlier on this year it's pretty clear that Johansson can make a kickass action star, so colour me excited.
