It's numbers are in and it's official: selfie is Oxford dictionary's 2013 word of the year. It had to fight off some fierce competition from 'bitcoin', 'twerk', and 'binge-watch', which are perfectly respectable terms in their own right, but selfie beat out its contemporaries because of its huge surge in usage over the last year. The editors at the Oxford dictionary claim that its usage has increased a staggering 17,000 percent over the last year (I have to admit that I helped those numbers).

Oh, and in case you ever wanted to know what the actual dictionary definition for a selfie is, look no further...

Well, there it is, folks. Selfie has an official dictionary definition. This is society now. We did this. However, the Oxford University Press did manage to trace its usage way back to an Australian forum from 2002, and the hashtag first appeared on Flickr in 2004. Now go forth and take some selfies to celebrate this momentous occasion.
