Last week reeked of early promise from Eagulls and Frankie and the Heartstrings, before a characteristic late burst over the weekend propelled Maps and Atlases to the summit, as they collected 55% of the vote for ‘Living Decorations’. As a huge week for album releases with Yuck, Toro Y Moi and Jamie xx, amongst others, offering new LPs, we won’t allow ourselves to get despondent, and get to sample a particularly hype-heavy week, including SXSW champions and former Arctic Monkey collaborators. First up are the aforementioned Toy Horses, with the hormonal ‘And It Was You’, then Miles Kane and ‘Come Closer’. We’ll follow up with the sublime nursery rhyme/lo-fi/xylophone stylings of Cults and ‘Go Outside’, take ‘The Last Dance’ with Clare Maguire, then dine alfresco on Jamie Woon’s ‘Lady Luck’. Obviously you’re voting for the official single release of the track, but I’ve included this version as an alternative, beautiful example of Woon’s depth. Keep Shelly In Athens have ‘A Song To Cheer You Up’, whilst alternatively you can try the atmospheric ‘New Wonder’ from Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and the Cairo Gang. Now I know that Radioleg or whatever they’re called have a new album out, but nearly a week on from the release, you may just about be getting vaguely bored of it, and there’s no better selection of tracks than this week’s to keep you melancholy, but still veer away from an unrelenting, minimalist falsetto.
