With his debut album Prom King arriving this month via Carpark Records, we asked Skylar Spence (fka Saint Pepsi) to craft us a special back-to-school playlist:

"As promised, the academic year has reared its ugly head and the days of blissfully prolonged slumbers have dwindled. But fear not friends, for we have music! I've put together a playlist designed for school dances, homecomings - did I hear someone say prom? -- music to groove to year round, whenever you need a reminder that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope you enjoy!"

You can stream the mix by using the handy YouTube player below. Failing that, it's on Spotify and Rdio too (minus the odd song or two).

1. Last Dinosaurs - 'Apollo'
One of my favorite groups just put out their second album and this song's my favorite -- the hooks are anthemic and there's a killer guitar solo in the bridge. It's an interesting way to start off the night, too: who hasn't wanted to be somebody else before?

2. Wonder Girls - 'I Feel You'
If you haven't heard the Wonder Girls, you're missing out, but you hired me to DJ this party so I got you. This is the best '80s maxi-pop revivalism this side of Carly Rae Jepsen, as far as I'm concerned.

3. Jack J - 'Looking Forward To You'
This is the song that makes the quiet kid that doesn't talk to anyone run to the center of the dance floor and breakdance like a motherfucker. NOBODY would have pegged that kid for a world-class breakdancer, but there he is, he's fantastic. You're almost brought to tears.

4. Cosmo's Midnight - 'Walk With Me' (feat. Kučka)
This song gives me goosebumps. Great for when you want to tire out the dancers because the buffet is almost ready. They'll break a sweat!

5. Sweet Female Attitude - 'Flowers' (Sunship Remix)
So you're on the buffet line and I'm playing this song, because it's too fast for losers to dance to and there's a lot of losers in your graduating class (your words, not mine). But it's fucking GREAT. And you look great, and so does your date. Maybe you take some pictures in a photo booth, and the pictures make you think of this song!

6. SebastiAn - 'Arabest'
Dinner is over and most of these dumb kids didn't eat anyway because they drank on the way there and they want to stay drunk, so here's a jam to keep the night moving. Maybe to trip them out, I'd also play the sampled song, Howard Johnson's 'Say You Wanna', which is of equal value on this prom playlist.

7. Howard Johnson - 'Say You Wanna'
I mean, it's better than fucking 'Uptown Funk'. Even if it's not.

8. Laura Rychlick - 'Fireflies' (Owl City Cover) (Nightmare)
Okay, so let me explain. I realized I needed a song to play between 'Say You Wanna' and Smashing Pumpkins' classic 'Tonight, Tonight', and this was literally the only song I could picture as a midpoint between the two. I think this version is streets ahead of the original.

9. Smashing Pumpkins - 'Tonight, Tonight'
The DJ didn't play this at my prom, which was total bullshit because he chose that Michael Buble song to send the night off, instead. The two kids who won the "Best Couple" superlative are crying their eyes out in separate corners of the room. You've gotta deal with this all summer?!

10. Toro y Moi - 'Cake'
I wasn't going to end on a sour note. This is one of my favorite songs to listen to when I get down, because it makes me feel like things are about to get better. It's hard to remember that all the time, especially when things are looking down, but things can and do get better, and music heals all wounds.
