After last week's revelation that YouTube were apparently set to bring in strict new licensing rules that would all but kill of independent labels on the service, SoundCloud have decided that it wants to help said artists - putting them on the right track to making money out of their art form.

In parallel with the new streamlined iOS app that launched this week, SoundCloud have revealed plans to bring about some interesting and innovative ways to monetise content that will benefit artists.

Speaking to The Guardian, SoundCloud co-founder and chief technology officer Eric Wahlforss said the company is working on ways to pass money along to its creators. "Right now in the U.S. we're experimenting with different monetization approaches," he said. "We're ... throwing a couple of things out there and testing the waters a bit. We're super-excited about where this stuff can go."

What this means for artists is currently not clear but at least the German-based streaming giant are taking steps in the right direction.
