Obviously having seen the success of probably the most interesting part of Apple Music, their Beats 1 radio station – with shows from the likes of Grimes, Drake and Pharrell – Spotify have decided to muscle in on radio territory with their own offering: In Residence.

The difference here is that, unlike Beats 1, which gives the feeling of solidarity you get when listening to something that's broadcast live and on an international level, In Residence will consist of pre-recorded shows. Specifically, these will be playlists interspersed with talk segments, uploaded to Spotify by whatever artists happening to be curating the music in whatever instance.

So far, as you can see from the image above, there are four In Residence "shows" available so far from Jonesy's Jukebox, Tonga, Jungle and Big Narstie. The tweet above from XL notifies followers of Jungle's contribution.

Despite not following a traditional radio format, and is perhaps a less exciting, less engaging alternative to Beats 1, this new launch from Spotify does add an interesting and convenient on-demand-only take on traditional radio.
