Yeah, yeah, it’s from a demo’s album (and demo’s from a four-year-old album at that), but Stars ‘The Worst Thing’ is a shuffly melancholic gem. Sounding strangely like Noah and the Whale, an unexpectedly affecting tale of childhood love unfolds, and its appeal comes from constant surprises. A deceptively uneventful verse rattles along, then gives way to a shivers-down-the-spine chorus as a ghostly choir swells behind singer Torquill Campbell’s resigned “it occurred to me that some day she’d grow old, and it was the worst thing that ever happened to me”, before the whole thing descends into glitchy instrumental free fall.
