Steve Gunn will be releasing a new album called The Unseen In Between via Matador on January 18th; we've already been treated to the stunning 'New Moon'. Today he follows it up with 'Stonehurst Cowboy', which sits at the centre of the album, both in terms of tracklisting and emotion.

Speaking on the track, Gunn says "’Stonehurst Cowboy’ is a tribute to my late father, who passed away in 2016... Stonehurst is an area in Southwest Philadelphia where both my parents grew up. Heavily affected by the Vietnam War, he became an adult at hyperspeed after high school when he was drafted -- though he didn’t end up actually fighting in Vietnam. He was too young to know what the hell was going on when the war broke, and it wasn’t until he, his brothers, and friends came back to make any sense of it.”

In 'Stonehurst Cowboy' we're face to face with Gunn as he sings over crystalline acoustic, with only very subtle undertones of bass and synth sketching a background. This allows Gunn's underappreciated voice to shine, and his storytelling abilities come into focus. Listening to 'Stonehurst Cowboy' is like sitting next to Gunn on the couch in his old family home, flicking through an old photo album of his parents, and in the song he captures the deep and rich emotion that comes from visiting a time in your parents' complex lives before your existence even started.

Below you'll find a live acoustic video of Steve Gunn playing 'Stonehurst Cowboy', while the studio version of the track can be heard on your preferred streaming platform.
