Studio Moross is the studio founded and headed up by designer and illustrator Kate Moross. With previous solo work including a widespread billboard campaign for Cadbury's and a collection for Topshop, Studio Moross focuses solely on musical projects, taking on branding and web design as much as video creation and art direction for a diverse bunch of artists that includes TĀLĀ, Lion Babe and Disclosure (just to name a few).

Their most recent project has just appeared: the artwork for Aqualung's latest album, 10 Futures, released this week (19th January). Working on everything from typeface to the general layout of the album's artwork, Studio Moross employed a number of unconventional methods – 3D scanning, 3D printing, and even modified K'NEX robots – to realise their creative vision.

Here to guide us through the project with some words and a few exclusive behind-the-scenes pics is Studio Moross designer, Guy Field.

Logos

"When Matt originally contacted us he had some conceptual themes he wanted the artwork to reference."

Releases

"We looked at copying and reproduction, fragility and machine error, drawing, looping, and happy accidents. These themes come from the way Matt makes his tracks, playing with analogue and digital methods. To reference this, we wanted to use a machine or digital process in an analogue way.

"We created a series of 'drawing machines' - tweaked Knex robots with pens and drawing devices attached to their legs! They were set free on large sheets of A2 paper and the results scanned in. They created imperfect looping patterns."

The Making Of

"For the type we used a 3D printer, we generated a design and printed it out and scanned it back in. The nature of the 'print' means the design is imperfect, adding a certain analogue quality to the logo."

Press Shots

"Finally for the press shots, we had Matt's head 3D scanned. We used this 3D model to generate a series of rendered images of Matt's head, that look almost real. We also printed out the 3D head and photographed it for the internal booklet artwork.

"Everything was brought together and densely layered for a rich and striking design."
