Photobucket Photobucket Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Folk Show - Norwich Arts Centre // 23rd January 2011 One is a much loved indie-folk songwriter from New York. The other, a ‘US National Treasure’ of 70s psych-folk. Together, they are a match made in folkie heaven. Expect offbeat lyrics and intricate, traditional arrangements, in a fittingly intimate venue. Photobucket Photobucket Soccer 96 / Grande Duke / Hot Head Show / Fat Bicth – Cowley Club // 19th January 2011 More fun at Cowley Club, this week with four bands for a suggested donation of £3. Looping and electro-tinged tribal experimentation from Soccer 96, slightly proggy, math-y and post-rock instrumental complexity from Grande Duke, fast-paced blues-cum-ska (in a strangely good way) from Hot Head Show, and with the noisey and weird Fat Bicth opening the night. Should be an incredible, if somewhat unusual, evening. Photobucket Photobucket The Walkmen - Central Methodist Hall // 20th January 2011 Most people will recognise The Walkmen from their 2004 indie dancefloor hit ‘The Rat’ (if you think you don’t know it, search for it and you’ll realise you do!). So why are they this week’s Manchester recommended gig? Well, the band has improved with each release, proving they are more than one hit dancefloor wonders, and becoming increasingly charming within. And the venue is far from ordinary. A Methodist hall within the centre of Manchester is not usually on a band’s tour circuit, but a rather charismatic surprise. This is a chance to see a well established band that guarantees a lively evening.
