Before Aaron and I got to enjoy the experience of the Eden Sessions on Saturday, we had to go under a five-hour road trip from London to Cornwall first. Before we even took to the road our journey seemed laced with bad fortune, as Aaron was confronted by an angry transvestite Arab, and I was confronted by an upset old lady who believed the world was in a bad way; this could only be another episode of That Slater and Hunt Look. Fortunately things didn’t turn out so bad once we reached the motorways, apart from a wrong turn, which led us to Plymouth! We of course had the good old iPod link to the stereo, which provided us with our main source of entertainment for the trip. The downside to this was that as I was too busy driving to pick the music, Aaron pronounced himself DJ (I know what some of you are thinking: disaster) and there were times when I nearly crashed the car from hearing samples of Craig David and the Jonas Brothers, but fortunately he had the good sense at times to use my iPod instead, and even at one point played a bit of Beirut! Now that’s a 405 scoop right there! My last exertion of control was to play the whole of Neil Young’s Live Rust on the way back, which a sleepy Aaron was too idle to change like he had the nerve to do half way though ‘Rebellion’ by Arcade Fire. Anyway, once crimes against music were put aside, along with my constant threats to leave my companion at the side of the road, it became a great adventure. We were like the Lone Ranger and Tonto (me being the Lone Ranger of course). What I’ve put together is a mixtape of the most memorable songs of the trip; the ones that made us sing and shout our hearts out like a couple of girls wailing into their hairbrushes in front of a mirror, as well as the ones that summed up the experience of going to a gig in the countryside. This goes out to all you rural dwellers who trudge through deep grass and risk getting run over on a pitch black road, just so you can enjoy a drink with your live music!
