ALA.NI is a musician you can honestly say you’ve never come across before. Sure she loves jazz, soul, and is a student of those disciplines but her honesty and direct yet sombre approach to singing is firmly distinct to her. Which is what makes this episode particularly special, because her personality off stage couldn’t be a starker contrast from the reflective songs she sings. Offstage, ALA.NI is affable, loud, engaging, and quite a wild card.

For the latest edition of the 405 Exchange podcast, Ken Grand-Pierre spoke to ALA.NI about her inspiration uncle, writing from the point of view of other people, and why she recorded the album the way she did. Check out their conversation below along with her Tiny Desk Concert.

“The experience of making this album was both a conscious and subconscious experience.”
