Every so often I'll trawl through the thousands of friends on our Myspace for a suitable candidate for our Radar feature but more than likely I find the adventure quite exhausting. This time around though it was like the proverbial stroll through the park. Sarah Maple Contemporary Artist [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="216" caption="Sarah Maple"][/caption] Lets take a look at the biog... Sarah Maple was born in 1985 and grew up in Sussex, where she lives today. She did her BA in Fine Art at Kingston University and in October 2007, won '4 New Sensations', a new art prize for graduates, voted by the public online, organised by Channel 4 and The Saatchi Gallery. Much of her inspiration originated from her being brought up as a Muslim, with parents of mixed religious and cultural backgrounds. Understandably, issues of identity are of huge interest to her. Maple's work often takes on fabricated scenes and situations and she admits she is affected by the art world, as well as from her general surroundings; including friends, family, television and popular culture. She is also greatly moved by music, comedy and literature. She believes these influences are truly woven into her art, and provide the platform upon which her work is realised. Maple states that the aim of her work is: "to give my audience food for thought. I believe comedy is a great tool to achieve this, which is why I choose to portray my conceptual ideas through a light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek approach".

This video might also help us understand this young artist a bit more: As you can tell from the Biog, the above photo and the video, she has a sense of humour. A good one at that! Let's have a look at the photography side of her work first. From the photo's it's plain to see that 1.) Maple appears in all the photo's (Which is generally the case with her work) and 2.) Their very provocative. In terms of the 'signs' photo's you could be mistaken for thinking that she's just another Myspace scene whore (which was my initial thought) but once you've seen a lot of the work and find out more about her you suddenly get a sense of the intelligence and humour behind it all. Her expressive face conveys that side of her personality more than anything else, including the signs. I also like the fact that when you look at her inspirations, comedy sits quite nicely against classic artistic muses like Pete Blake, which is very rare indeed. Photography isn't her only format though as she's quite the painter. Lets have a look. From what I could make out her photography seems to take precedence but In some respects I prefer her paintings. It's a trade off really. I guess you lose a certain level 'shock' with the paintings even though she could probably push them further than her photography. I just feel the paintings showcase her talent  a bit more. Either way, she's got something and I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next, regardless of the fact that The Independent on Sunday likened her to Tracey Emin! Links
