After revelling in high-profile action roles, such as Bane in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, a mixed-martial arts fighter in Warrior, and as a moonshine entrepreneur in Lawless, London actor Tom Hardy has been pegged for a very different kind of role.

Hardy will be playing the role of Elton John in an upcoming biopic about the legendary singer-songwriter. The story was broken by Variety yesterday, informing that the project - which has been in work for nearly three years - will be directed by Michael Gracey and written by War Horse screenplay writer Lee Hall.

Entitled Rocketman, the project will begin shooting around this time next year. Elton John will also be re-working several of his more notable tracks specifically for the project, which will be produced by Rocket Films and AI Film with a major release from Focus Features.
